PD For the Kids

Greetings JCCS Community

There is an excitement brewing up among a small subset of teachers at JCCS! Becky Bertrand, Ashley Anema, and Patricia Vehof-Visser have been diligently working as part of our Program Committee.

Our Sylvan Testing results from this fall (in combination with results from previous years) have demonstrated to us that our literacy scores are slightly below the provincial average. As a result, we have set out to improve this area of learning at JCCS.

As a committee, we have been meeting monthly over the past few months and we have come up with a great plan and look forward to sharing it with the rest of staff. As a result, there will be an additional PD day before the end of the school year. On Friday, June 1, JCCS will not be holding regular classes as the teachers will be gathering together to discuss, learn, and create aspects of our curriculum in the following school year.

Much of what will be studied on this day is to ponder on how we can have our learning and curriculum align itself with our mission and vision. We are Jarvis Community Christian School. Our school is divided into many classrooms that learn different concepts. However, in analyzing the Ontario Curriculum for Literacy, overall expectations and skills have similar threads across all grades. As a result, we are looking to implement school-wide community learning where all classes from Kindergarten to Grade 8 are focusing on these similar overall expectations, but at different levels and skills depending on grade level.

For you, who may not have any background in education, you can think of it like the blind men and the elephant. Each one is studying the elephant, but they are all studying a different part of the elephant and each part is integral to the whole concept of what an elephant is. If you are unfamiliar with this analogy, I have included a picture below.

This is another example of how we continue to strive to make JCCS a greater school. We are never perfect, nor will we ever be, but in analyzing and making important adjustments, we will continue to have a school to be proud of. We are accountable to God and each other to have not just a great “Christian” school, but a great educational school as well.

So, remember, Friday, June 1 will be a PD day and the continuation of JCCS serving its supporting community. Thanks for your continued partnership with us!
